Charles

Mostly I am not a fan of dealing with the general public. But the other day I was talking to an elderly gentleman and he smelled like soap and old spice. The familiar scent transported me back to some of my favorite childhood days.

Happy days spent in my grandpa's potting shed. Growing herbs from vintage seed packets. Buckets of golf balls that he had collected from all the gardens he looked after that bordered the local golf course. The clattering of old tools and plant pots. Helping me tend my mouse and wild bird grave yard. No creature too small or unworthy of a dignified burial.

He never questioned why I was wearing a flower pot for a hat. Always held the wings of my dress so I didn't fall in the river. Took me to the local pig farm so I could snuggle new born piglets. Built me and my sister a swiss chalet in the garden so we could play house. Never got angry when I followed him around like a little shadow as he Mended things. I know you shouldn't have favorites, but Grampy Charles was mine. He is the reason I will one day have a garden shed all of my own.

Start your own potting shed this summer with antique garden equipment and seeds pictured from Re-found objects, or try Baileys home and garden.

first blossom

Saturday. My weekend started with a candlelit dinner for Earth hour. It was nice to linger in the quiet still darkness and get away from the world for a while.

Sunday. Fruit toast. A walk in the park. First blossom. Grocery shopping. New linens. Cheese and bread.

The right white.

Hello Monday!

I have started my two weeks intensive hunt for white living room inspiration. First stop James Merrell. Hopefully we should be inspired and ready for a good Friday paint off.

If you have any places I could look, be sure to let me know.

calming things

I recently met Sam and whilst visiting her lovely blog I found a very special and calming place. The blog and shop of Sveta Dresher. How beautiful are the peepers on this little girl. The dolls, the soft leather, rustic linen, delicate garlands. Simple things for a simple life. The natural colours and fibers in these images were just what I needed after a busy, tiring week.

Hope to be back soon with a bit more pep!
Happy weekend.

lets go exploring

Another little flurry of beautiful items have been added to the Toast collection. I'm thinking this red and blue outfit would be perfect for exploring a pretty greek island on a blazing hot summers day.

After too many visits to the Toast site I have been continually bewitched by this shirt dress and trouser combination. I am confessing to a splurge. It should arrive any day now. If the husband is reading. . . I got free P&P, 10 % off and free returns. I bet he is hoping it doesn't fit!

shrieks and squeals

More of Sunday. A breakfast of yummy home baked cranberry hot cross buns, awaited me at a friends house. They didn't last long enough to get a picture.

We tidied a bit of the garden. The magnolia tree is just getting ready to burst into bloom.

I got a surprise flash soaking whilst trying to fathom out how to work the hose. (not that technical as it turns out) TIP. Do not just snap the end off! Loud shrieks and squeals as I tried to stick my thumb in the end which just made wild jets spray in all directions. Lucky we had a bright smiling sun to dry me off.

Once home I baked an emergency dinner I had been saving in the freezer. Mashed sweet potato and cheese topped salmon and vegetable pie with hot butter and pepper peas, and I think I recall a small clause in the sweet things agreement, I think we were having a little sugar fix on Sundays? Jelly babies. All gone.

Now another week begins. I wonder if the sun will stay?

Golden blonde

I have had a fun day at home and visiting with friends. Now the sun has gone down I am settling in for a dose of my favorite golden blonde, Doris Day, while I await my husbands return.

Fun and games

I have been tagged by Holly and Nina and though I don't always acknowledge a tagging (sorry!), this sounded kind of fun. so here we go.

POEM
I Meant To Do My Work Today.
by Richard Le Gallienne

I meant to do my work today,
But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,
And a butterfly flitted across the field,
And all the leaves were calling me.

And the wind went sighing over the land,
Tossing the grasses to and fro,
And a rainbow held out its shining hand
So what could I do but laugh and go?

SONG
Isn't this a lovely day to be caught in the rain.
sung by Fred Astaire.
Once on a boat trip in Lille it started to delicately
rain. Afterwards as we got walking back through the old streets
we got caught in a terrific storm and were soaked through.

Hello yellow

Today I woke up and I was so full of joy. I mean busting at the seams happy. I think this is the difference six days straight of sun can do for a girl. I leave the blind in the bedroom about a foot above the windowsill so I am woken up by the sun shining in on me. It illuminates, bounces and reflects all around, making me extra pleased at the decision to paint the room white.
I will definitely be campaigning to paint the living room white over the easter break. The thought of our little home, so sunny and light, just makes me want to squeal all over again with joy.

If it's cloudy in your little corner of the world, a visit to one or all of these wonderful girls should do the same trick as a day in the sun. Pia, Chelsea, Heather, Sofia, Nadia.
