Just preparing lunch before I brave the outside world, a world which today is filled with plumes of smoke from the remains of our smouldering Pier after some swines set it alight last night. I need to find an outfit that won't mind soaking up the miserable smoke and ash. Meanwhile as I muster the will to leave, I am cheering myself up with a 1920's film day, a tonne of sequinned headdresses and feathers and flower garlands to lift my dampened spirits.
I thought I would also share a picture of my living room as it looks this morning, the swan it seems has been to busy to tidy. But I've not been idling, I spent the morning listing a final few sets of photographs in my Etsy shop. and the lounge will be ship shape later.
It officially starts today. My four day week. The new blog is finding it's feet with the help of my husband and all the technical stuff is slowly sinking in pixel by pixel. So while all that unfolds I thought I would pick out some Betty from Mad Men style clothes to keep me focused on getting up and dressed even though I am staying home. Dean is in NYC at the moment and although I need help with bigger tasks, I have achieved a few baby steps on my own today. After a wild night out I woke up on Sunday morning to find this beautiful film in my mailbox. A real day saver. I instantly fell in love. With the styling the music and Alison's red hair. I will watch it over and over. This stop motion short was made by Angela Kohler and her boyfriend Ithyle, with Alison Sudol from A Fine Frenzy. I know you will enjoy the film as much as me, So I sent Angela over some questions and I am so glad she had time to answer them. Pop over and take a look at Angela's wonderful portfolio too.
What was the inspiration behind this piece? We wanted to make a visual journey, and we collaborated with Alison from the beginning, talking about the motifs that she likes in her personal life and in her music. We went to flea markets and picked up objects that inspired us, then we built the piece around all of those elements. How long did it take to make? 3 days. We built the fake floor in our studio in one day, then shot the film in 2 days. When we were done Ali was pretty sore and from laying on her back on a wood floor for so long, and we all had a few splinters. It took a week to clean up. Were there any parts of the film that were particularly hard to capture? The Ocean scene was an experiment with string. We thought it would look amazing and flow, but it was really hard to get the enormous pile of yarn to be hidden behind her skinny little waist before it began to stretch to the edges of the frame. She was teetering on this giant yarn ball trying to be comfortable. And our dog kept running off with pieces of it. Who is the music by ? Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy (who is the main character in the piece) crafted the music to fit the film and Butch Walker engineered and produced it. Where or who are all the dresses from / made by? Most of the clothing was vintage. Who or what are some of your creative influences? We are inspired by things around us. Old things. Things with texture and history. We do a lot of "hey look at this" to each other. I think if it is beautiful, it inspires us. Do you have anymore that you are working on? We are currently working on a series of advertisements for the Amazon Kindle as well as a bunch of personal projects, we are a little OCD, there is always some idea that we can't keep our minds off of.
Watching Holiday Inn and eating pistachio nougat. No gym today after all, leaning more (like you) towards the idea of beginning in January after the glazed ham and plum pudding are safely out of eyeshot. Seems like a better, safer plan don't you think? Can't decide which decoration path to go down? Bright colours and jingle bells or muted antique silvers and silent nights?
Taking inspiration from Audrey Tautou in her new role as Coco Chanel, I cannot wait to see this film, and I will not be satisfied until I find a proper boat necked blue and white striped top to wear on sundays, surely I will need it to plant window boxes . . . . . to collect freshly baked rolls from the bakery. . . . to drink coffee at outdoor cafe tables . . . . to paint. . . . to read . . . . . .

Hows your week been? I finally got around to seeing The edge of love and yep thats it, in a uniform of wellies, dresses, and cardigans (I guess I have the clothes down already, I swear I was born in the wrong era) I want to pack up and move to some ramshackle un-modernised house in the Welsh wilds. Quite a gritty story but the sets were, for me, perfection.
